Abstract: After reviewing the UV sensitivity of inflation I will discuss in very simple terms how large field inflationary models can arise in string theory. Natural candidates for the inflaton field are axions that are abundant in string theory compactifications and that respect a shift symmetry. I will show how we can break this shift symmetry to get power-law inflation with a variety of different powers. In addition to discussing generic features of these inflationary models I will present several explicit examples.
