Abstract: We review the embedding tensor technique which has been developed to
study general embeddings of gauge groups in theories with a given rigid
symmetry group. For extended supergravities this techniques classifies
all possible supersymmetric deformations of the theory, so that it
captures all possible flux compactifications in a group-theoretical setting.
The first part of the lecture deals with the following topics: hidden
symmetries, gauging and gauge group embeddings, the hierarchy of p-form
gauge fields. The second part discusses the p-form hierarchy in 4
space-time dimensions, maximal supergravities and M-Theory degrees of
freedom, and the ''end of the hierarchy''.
