Abstract:	Supernovae are very luminous objects and they are good tools for cosmological studies. They may be useful even while the details of the explosion mechanism are not yet known. In my talk I show on simple order-of-magnitude estimates that catastrophic events, like supernova explosions, are inevitable in life of some stars. I discuss how the supernova light is produced either in decays of radioactive nuclei or in strong shocks. It will be explained how recent explosion models predict light curves of supernovae used for deriving cosmological parameters of our Universe.
