Astroparticle physics is the newest discipline of our fundamental sciences. Born out of the confluence of different experimental traditions,from the centenary cosmic ray research to the most recent proton decay and dark energy searches, working at the theoretical frontiers of many disciplines from Cosmology and Astrophysics to Particle Physics, it has recently grown to a domain of big science. It therefore needs, in order to expand, a better definition of the programmatic and institutional framework. In my lecture, I will first describe the process by which Europeans arrived to a common definition of the field and a roadmap for the future large astroparticle observatories. I will also describe briefly the scientific potential of these observatories and the many links between them in view of a multi-messenger study of the Universe. I will then describe the regional complementarities that encourage a generalisation of the process to a global scale and the status of this effort to produce an intercontinental action plan. |
