Abstract: |
I will discuss recent observational advances into the mapping and understanding of the assembly of galaxies through cosmic time, with particular focus on the high cosmic noon period from z=1 to 3, when the star formation rate density in galaxies peaked. A simple scenario is emerging in which gas fractions as regulated by intergalactic inflows drive the rise of galaxies activity towards high redshifts, including star formation and AGN. A small population of strong burst is necessary to account for the properties of the most bolometrically luminous systems. While this simple and promising scenario is still to be fully validated at z<2-3, at even higher redshifts a global empirical mapping of galaxy evolution is still to be developed, which sets exciting expectations in the years to come. |
