Abstract: |
I will describe the discovery and analysis of giant (>100kpc) proto-galaxy systems (Lyman-alpha nebulae) in the very distant universe (at redshift as high as z~2), found predominantly around luminous Active Galactic Nuclei. These phenomena reveal massive (~10^11 Msun) reservoirs of cool, enriched gas with kinematics suggestive of gravitationally infalling material and galactic-scale outflows. I will review the recent results and describe anticipated advances with the advent of optical IFUs on 10m-class telescopes and deep narrow-band imaging with Hyper Suprime Camera on Subaru Telescope.
