Abstract: |
Observations tell us that most stars rotate at least to some degree. This not only makes them more oblate but also gives rise to a whole new set of fluid instabilities that non-rotating stars do not experience. Rotation has an important effect on the evolution of the star, especially on mixing of chemical species, which is crucial for nucleosynthesis. Yet for reasons of simplicity, rotation is often ignored in stellar evolution calculations. Even if it is included, assumptions on the internal stratification have to be made in order to fulfil the spherically symmetric, hydrostatic structure. Any kind of rotational instability and angular momentum transport have to be added using mostly phenomenological prescriptions. I will discuss the assumptions usually made in calculating rotating stellar models and then show what can be done to improve the situation with modern hydrodynamic simulations. |
