| Abstract: | I will discuss how global properties of gauge groups can be understood as geometric properties in M-theory. I will focus on line operators in 4D N=4 (resp. N=2) SYM theories. We will see that a set-up involving M5-branes compactified on a torus is enough to completely classify all the possible gauge groups corresponding to a given gauge algebra. We will furthermore reconstruct the line operators via M2-branes wrapping a geodesic on said torus. We will see that the DSZ quantisation condition for dyonic lines corresponds to a purely topological requirement on the parent theory in 11 dimensions. With the same methods, it is possible to classify the phases of necklace quivers. |
