High-redshift (z > 6) quasars are a unique probe of the distant Universe, for understanding the formation of supermassive black holes, the early evolution of the host galaxies, and the origin and progress of the cosmic reionization. Since 2014, we are carrying out a spectroscopic survey for high-z quasars based on the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program survey. Our project involves 60 nights with Subaru in two intensive programs, and additional nights from other 8m telescopes. I will overview the goals and the results of the project so far, including the discovery of ~80 new quasars at 5.8 < z < 7.1 and the establishment of the quasar luminosity function at z = 6, and will conclude with prospects for the future. |
