Abstract: |
The main goal of the ESAs Euclid mission is to study the nature of Dark Energy by mapping a large part of the sky with high spatial resolution optical and NIR imaging and spectroscopy. As part of the calibration plan, Euclid will observe four 10 square degree deep fields (NEP, CDFS, Akari Deep field south) to 40 times the nominal depth, reaching 26th magnitude in three near infrared bands. The Cosmic Dawn Survey initiative, is an effort coordinated from the Cosmic Dawn Center in Copenhagen, to complement the Euclid Deep Fields observable from Hawaii (NEP and CSFS) with deep MIR imaging from Spitzer Space Telescope (6000h) and optical imaging from Subaru/HSC (30 nights via a University of Hawaii large program). The combined dataset will have the wavelength coverage and sensitivity needed to construct unbiased, stellar mass complete (M>M*) samples of galaxies to z>8 over an area 100 larger than any existing survey. As the most massive galaxies trace the underlying dark matter distribution, this offers a unique opportunity to map the large scale structure of the Universe on all relevant cosmic scales throughout the epoch of reionization. I will present a proposal to extend the currently planned PFS survey to include the Euclid/Cosmic Dawn Fields. The extended survey will enable a range of ground breaking science that would otherwise not be possible, including: 1) constraining cosmology, and the interplay between dark matter and baryonic matter through the epoch of reionization (and primeval galaxy formation), 2) constraining the main sequence of star formation, the stellar mass function, and the stellar to halo mass function of galaxies to z=10 and 3) finding and understanding the first reionized bubbles in the Universe. |
