Abstract: |
The discovery of interstellar dust will be briefly reviewed, and I will describe the different ways in which we are able to study interstellar dust. I will then discuss how we go about trying to "build" a model for interstellar dust. Modelers must now contend with a wide range of observational constraints on the optical properties of dust, extending from ~0.0001 eV (microwave emission from dust) to ~5 keV (X-ray scattering by dust). Spitzer and Akari have provided a wealth of IR data, and Herschel is adding more. Additional constraints are imposed by elemental abundances and other considerations, including dust grains preserved in meteorites, and dust grains entering the solar system today. A dust model that is more-or-less consistent with the above data will be described, with a few comparisons to observations. I will mention a few unsettled questions. |
