Abstract: | One leading hypothesis of dark matter is that it is thermally produced in the early Universe. Although the thermal production mechanism is one of the oldest and probably the best studied scenario, in this talk it is shown that the standard description can fail even in simple WIMP examples. I present refined descriptions that allow for a more precise prediction of, e.g., the thermal relic abundance. These cover the case of early kinetic decoupling, as well as WIMP scenarios, where long-range forces play a crucial role in the determination of the upper bound on the dark matter mass. In the latter case, it is also demonstrated that a late second freeze-out, induced by long-range force effects, can alleviate the Hubble tension while the model can at the same time ameliorate the core-cusp (diversity) problem. |
