Abstract: |
In this talk I will discuss recent advances in Galactic Archaeology using the Gaia satellite and legacy surveys as well as the discovery of new structures at the edge of the galaxy and what these could tell us about the Milky Way's formation. I will also introduce an observational programme to characterise age distributions in those structures to probe the star formation history of the outer disc and it's possible relation with satellite impacts. I will also briefly discuss how the discovery of the phase-space spiral in Gaia DR2 and it's mapping out to large radii offers us a new unique way of using disequilibrium dynamics to map the distribution of dark matter in the midplane of the disc and rule out some alternative DM models. |
