Abstract: | Data science has emerged as an essential tool for astronomers out of the deluge of high-quality data pouring from observational surveys and numerical simulations. However, harnessing the full potential of machine learning requires a synergy between observational and theoretical astronomy. I will begin by showing how realistic synthetic observations of numerical simulations can be generated for targeted surveys like the HSC-SSP. I will then highlight the two main advantages of this approach: (1) apples-to-apples comparison between observation and theory and (2) mappings between observables and simulation meta-data which can be used to interpret observations in a fundamentally unique way. |
