Abstract: | Quantum Field Theory is the fundamental language of a wide variety of physical systems, and forms the cornerstone of modern particle physics. One of the longest standing and most important questions in Quantum Field Theory is how to extract properties of QFTs in regimes in which they are strongly interacting, where standard perturbative methods fail. To address this problem, it is useful to focus on systems with enhanced symmetries, such as supersymmetry and/or conformal symmetry. New insights can also be gained by studying systems that are geometrically engineered in string theory, where the geometric definition of the QFT provides a crucial handle on its properties. In this colloquium, I will give a broad overview of how symmetry and geometry can be utilized as organizing principles for mapping the landscape of QFTs, and constraining their strong coupling dynamics. |
