Abstract: |
Fermions in even spacetime dimension admit symmetry groups under which the two chiralities of fermion transform differently, for example the SU(3) × SU(2) × U(1) symmetry of the Standard Model. For such a symmetry, we can ask several questions. Can we write down symmetry-preserving interactions that gap the theory? Can we write down symmetry-preserving boundary conditions? Can we realise the theory in a lattice model where the symmetry is exact? On-site? These questions hold the answers to many famous problems, such as the fermion doubling problem and the Callan-Rubakov effect. We will examine the relations between these problems, the progress on them so far, some new approaches, and show that for some of them an answer is still not known, even in principle. |
