Abstract: |
The theory of integrable systems has its origin in classical mechanics. The main interest is in equations of motions that admit the maximal possible number of conserved quantities. Integrability allows us to give a very elegant geometric description of the trajectories and to understand better the properties of the mechanical system. While the subject of integrable systems in classical mechanics is very well understood, the problem of extending the notion of integrability to higher-dimensional field theories is very difficult. In my talk, I would like to talk about some of the progress already made and to point out some of the challenges for both physicists and mathematicians. |
