About 5 years ago, Braverman, Finkelberg, and I gave a mathematical definition of Coulomb branches of 3d SUSY gauge theories, which were introduced and studied from the mid-'90s by theoretical physicists, e.g., Seiberg, Witten, Hanany, Kapustin, and many others. From a mathematical point of view, our definition could be regarded as the construction of new "spaces" or geometric objects, which are interesting to explore from various points of view, e.g., enumerative geometry, representation theory. In this colloquium aimed at non-experts, I will begin with various traditional approaches of mathematicians to construct and understand spaces, and then explain basic ideas in our definition. |
