Abstract: |
We present first results from the EIGER survey (Emission-line galaxies and Intergalactic Gas in the Epoch of Reionization), a JWST/NIRCam wide-field slitless spectroscopic campaign in the fields of six high-redshift quasars. First data in the field of z=6.33 hyperluminous quasar J0100+2802 yielded a sample of >110 confirmed [OIII]5008-emitting galaxies over z=5.3-7. These galaxies typically have very high [OIII] EWs (rest-frame ~1000A), low metallicities (~0.1 solar), and often exhibit complex morphologies, unlike what is observed locally. Interestingly, they are strongly clustered in redshift space, with three prominent overdensities identified. Correlating the [OIII]-emitter sample to the quasar’s Lyman-alpha forest data shows evidence of local ionization by galaxies and determine the dominant sources of the ionizing radiation at different epochs. We also characterized the earliest supermassive blackhole triggering this most luminous quasar and its host galaxy, and identified ~17 galaxies that are likely to host the known metal-absorption systems over 4
