The Standard Model of particle physics stands as one of humanity's most remarkable scientific achievements. It has been incredibly successful in explaining how the smallest building blocks of our universe work. But it's not the whole story. There's something mysterious called dark matter that makes up a large part of the universe. This unseen entity poses an intriguing challenge to our understanding of the natural world. At the heart of our quest to understand dark matter is the search at high-energy colliders, such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and future lepton colliders. However, the path to uncovering dark matter's secrets is fraught with challenges. The very nature of dark matter, its reluctance to interact with ordinary matter, makes it an elusive quarry. This talk explains the challenges of searching for dark matter at the LHC and why it's so hard. It also explores how we're using not only particle physics, but also ideas from other fields like quantum gravity, astrophysics, and cosmology to piece together the dark matter puzzle. |
