The Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI) is a NASA Small Explorer (SMEX)satellite mission in development with a planned launch in 2027. COSI is awide-field gamma-ray telescope designed to survey the entire sky at 0.2-5MeV. It provides imaging, spectroscopy, and polarimetry of astrophysicalsources, and its germanium detectors provide excellent energy resolutionfor emission line measurements. This presentation will include an overviewof the COSI mission, including the science, the technical design, and theproject status. I will also include an overview and status update on workat UC San Diego specifically to study the anticipated effects of radiationdamage on the COSI detectors, and our efforts to minimize those effects onthe spectral resolution of the instrument over the mission lifetime. |
