Abstract: |
The study of supergravity backgrounds as relevant to string compactification and gauge/string duality can often be simplified using the language of G-structures and generalized calibrations. Roughly speaking, the former are a natural extension of special holonomy arguments to backgrounds with fluxes, while the latter provide an efficient way for dealing with additional D-brane sources. In this talk we will review these concepts, paying special attention to the case of 4-dim N=1 type II backgrounds, where the relevant G-structure is an SU(3) x SU(3) structure on the generalized tangent bundle. As it turns out, such structures are not only applicable to the study of N=1 solutions, but also allow for the construction of N=0 backgrounds. We will apply this formalism to the construction of a SUSY-breaking IIB solution based on the Klebanov-Witten background. |
