Abstract: |
I'll start with a review of the motivations, goals, and current status of the study of higher-dimensional black holes. Then I'll explain how the main feature behind novel properties of these black holes, compared to four-dimensional ones, is that their horizons can have two characteristic lengths of very different size. A long-distance effective theory (blackfold approach) reveals novel kinds of black objects, but more generally it provides a new organizing framework for the dynamics of higher-dimensional black holes. |
