Abstract: |
Cosmic rays with energies above 10^{19} eV have been detected for 40 years, but their origin is not known even at present. The main reasons of difficulty to confirm their sources are their charges (the deflections of their trajectories from sources to the earth) and extremely low flux (1 event per km^2 century @ 10^{20} eV). Recent progress on experiments with very large aperture indicates that the deflections of the highest energy cosmic rays (HECRs) by intervening magnetic fields are a few degree and the origin of the HECRs is nearby extragalactic objects. In this seminar, I introduce our recent theoretical studies on the investigation of the sources of the HECRs focusing on the propagation process of them in Galactic and ntergalactic fields. We also discuss cosmogenic neutrinos, which are extremely high-energy neutrinos generated through photopion production between propagating HECRs and cosmic microwave background photons, and their implications to the sources of the highest energy cosmic rays. |
