Abstract: |
I will discuss new developments in the evolution of the 3.6m Canada-France-Hawaii telescope, in particular the recent proposal to upgrade the facility to a dedicated, 10m, wide-field, highly multiplexed spectroscopic facility that will provide the missing capability in optical and NIR astronomy in the coming decade. I will provide updates on the scientific and technical status of the project, including synergies with the PFS instrument for Subaru. I will also discuss progress in developing a new partnership, and highlight the excellent opportunity that exists for Mauna Kea astronomers to create a uniquely powerful "Pacific Rim Observatory", for the long-term benefit of all communities. |
