IPMU is building a new instrument facility, SuMIRe, at the Subaru telescope to extend its scientific scope. I will discuss the promise of SuMIRe, encompassing the imaging survey of HSC and the spectroscopic survey of PFS, for the study of the origin and evolution of galaxies. The survey will enable the construction of data sets comparable to the SDSS one in several redshift slices up to z~2 with information about morphology, stellar populations, dynamics, and clustering. The SDSS provides us a picture of the condensed baryonic content of the universe essentially at the present epoch; SuMIRe will allow us to trace the evolution of this content from the formation epoch of galaxies to the present. |
