Abstract: |
Hyperpolarized 129Xe is now used in a wide variety of disciplines, spanning from biology and medicine to the investigation of fundamental physics. Methods for producing large quantities of hyperpolarized gas, accumulating it, and storing it continue to be active areas of interest. Ruset et al. (PRL, 2006) suggested a novel approach to quickly produce large quantities of gas and developed a simple model to describe the behavior of the system. We have improved upon the model and developed our own Xe polarizer to test the model's predictions. In particular, we have examined the output 129Xe polarization and the in situ 85Rb polarizations under a variety of conditions. These tests have revealed inadequacies in the model and our underlying assumptions of the relevant dynamics of the system. Understanding these dynamics will aid in the design and ptimization of future polarizers. |
