Abstract: |
An understanding of the influence of environment on both Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and star formation is crucial to determine the physical mechanism(s) regulating the coeval growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and the galaxies in which they reside. Deep multi-wavelength surveys (e.g., COSMOS) now offer the tools to explore in detail such studies over the last eight billion years by providing least biased samples of AGN, a characterization of the underlying galaxy population, and an assessment of the local environment. I will present new results based on the zCOSMOS redshift survey and X-ray observations with XMM-Newton that identify those galaxies hosting AGNs. We specifically measure star formation rates of AGN host galaxies, growth rates of these SMBHs, and the influence of the environment. Our findings shed light on the key ingredients for a galaxy to harbor an actively accreting SMBH and possible migration onto the local SMBH-galaxy mass relations. |
