Gravitational physics in higher dimensions can be used as a laboratory for conducting experiments in material science. Using the blackfold effective theory for higher dimensional black holes it is possible to show that long-wavelength perturbations of black branes may result in either fluid or elastic behavior. In such long-wavelength regimes black holes take an effective description as materials for which transport coefficients such as viscosities and conductivities can be measured but also response coefficients such as the Young modulus and piezoelectric moduli. Focusing on the elastic description we show how to measure such response coefficients and how this study can lead to a formal development of relativistic (electro)elasticity theory for materials which are bent in space but also in time.
