Abstract: |
The classical Morse theory relates the critical points of a function with the topology of the underlying manifold. In 1980s S.P. Novikov initiated a generalisation of this theory to the case of circle-valued Morse functions. In this survey talk we explain the construction of the Novikov complex, and outline some of its geometric applications to knot theory, jump loci for homology with local coefficients and others. |
