| Abstract: | In this lecture we launch into a detailed proof of the (black hole) singularity theorem of Roger Penrose. Proved in 1965, this was the first of the "singularity theorems." Crucial ingredients in this proof are Cauchy hypersurfaces and the famous "trapped surfaces," both of which we will examine in detail. We will also touch upon some recent work (2009,2012) on Cauchy hypersurfaces. I will distribute lecture notes to those who are interested. |
